Hi Murray
Have finally gotten started on building my system. I have decided on a CHOP system with a little over 2000 liter fish tank. Am trying to size the required grow bed size. I understand the concept of having an equal grow bed volume or greater than the fish tank. My question is when considering the GB volume, is media included or only water volume?

Hi Dennis, The volume is the total volume of the bed water and media included.

Murray, since we in Bermuda solely rely on rainwater and R.O. systems for our drinking water, i have virtually no buffer in my system. Any suggestions how to boost the buffering capacity. I have tried well washed beach sand, and I use hydrated lime as a ph up along with potassium bicarbonate.

Hi Uwe,
You are doing all you can by using hydrated lime and potassium hydroxide or potassium bicarbonate. It is natural and healthy for the system to have downwardly trending pH.
I hope this helps

in your instructional video you recommend the bell for the bell siphons be 2 1/2" in diameter which is near impossible to find in the states - I am thinking I will have to go to a 3/4" upstand and a 2" bell - think I'll be ok?

Hi Sam, You could go for those sizes and it will work. Slightly slower drain times and it will be a lower flow rate to start the siphon and to stop it. Best of luck with your project.

Hi Murray,
I finally starting my aquaponics project.
As I live in Dandenongs, Victoria, I am currently constructing a greenhouse to control the temperature during winter. I am intending to use a compost pile to heat the greenhouse during the colder months.
As I intend to have the greenhouse sealed during winter, it occurred to me that I need to consider pollination. How would you suggest that I address that issue? I know you have greenhouses but I think yours are open being in Queensland, you have a better climate.
Also would you recommend that I use Trout first up or go for Silver or Jade Perch?
I am basing my unit around your Indy 11.5, I got your book a while back now. I have to slightly modify it to suit the site. Once I perfect things, I will duplicate it.
Thanks in advance.
Kevin.

Hi Kevin, leafy greens do not need pollination. Tomatoes are self-pollinating. Other crops would have to be considered independently. I hope you enjoy your project.

Hi Murray, we're looking into setting up our first aquaponic system and would like to begin with an ibc chop 2 system. Does the diy aquaponic dvd have the plans for this system?
Cheers Fiona

Hi Fiona, Yes the plans do come with that DVD.
